In the work on this page, I use a combination of non-objective and representational vocabulary, hoping that their synthesis will provide an abstraction for what I perceive to be a need to balance oppositional and contradictory forces, perceptions and ideologies in our interaction with the world around us. There is a challenge in combining these two visual vocabularies in a satisfying way. Questions that arise include: Can one be on the surface and in the painting (in a illusionary sense) at the same time? What is the segue? How is unity achieved? My work investigates these questions from three different points of view: The fusion of heavy impasto with traditional figure modeling, windows of illusion within abstraction, and imposition of smaller abstractions upon figurative representation.
These investigations also involve the relationships between written language and visual art, perceptions of meaning found through gesture, narrative and the gender of the figure, and painting as meaningful reflection on the complexities of contemporary life.
